It took me many years to become an expert sales person. I learned and mastered every technique involved in making a prospective member an actual member and became quite good at it.

Truth Number Five: Not continuing will result in failure. Some of these truths are obvious. No one knows this cycle better than me. I’ve not only seen thousands of people fall victim to the hidden causes of fitness failure, but I’ve also fallen victim myself!

After breaking my hip in a brutal car accident in 2003, I decided I needed to join a gym.

I began working out 4, 5, and sometimes even 6 days per week. Aside from the muscular rehabilitation and health benefits, I was also getting into the best physical shape of my life.

I lost over 50 lbs in about 3 months time. I was eating healthily as well.

I then thought to myself, “I’m so immersed in fitness, I may as well start working in a gym”. And I did.

I was truly at the point of complete fulfillment in my life. I looked great, felt great and was doing something I was very passionate about for a living.

This continued for about another 2 years until the day that the journey toward failure began.

The reason I say it was a journey toward failure is because every action that we take impacts our life in some way.
Most times, that impact is either positive or negative. In some cases, we can’t see the effects of the impact right away. Sometimes, it builds up over days, months or even years.

But rest assured it is happening. And if you aren’t taking action that impacts you positively or brings you closer to success, then, by default, you are bringing yourself closer to failure.

To exceed in achieving any result, you must have vision, discipline, and motivation. This is especially true when it comes to losing weight.

When a person decides to take action to lose weight, they have all three of these components.

But somewhere along the line, one or more of these components disappears.

People either forget the vision they had for what they will look and feel like once the weight is lost, lack the discipline to exercise or eat healthily when they don’t want to, or are no longer motivated by the rewards associated with losing excess weight.

While the situation varies from person to person, this is how the cycle works.

For me, it was discipline and motivation. In between the time that I started working out and stopped, my wife and I had a baby.

Had I been motivated, I would have wanted to work out, but that’s not discipline because I would have wanted to work out, and being disciplined is doing it when you don’t want to.

The craziest thing about this whole situation was that I assumed that with all of my years in fitness witnessing people quitting their exercise programs, I would have known better. But I didn’t.

I knew what was stopping me but I didn’t know how to fix it. In the process, I gained back 40 of the 50 lbs that I had lost.

I knew it was all “mind over matter” but I didn’t know how to program my mind to develop the discipline and motivation that I needed to get back on track.
